OUR FOUNDING STORY

MADISON

HILL

Our director’s journey with stone mosaic began in New Delhi after graduating from the architecture program at the University of Florida and starting a career in India. It was there that she was introduced to the seamless mosaic technique, a craft with deep antique roots in India that has seen a resurgence in commercial production, inspired by traditional Roman and Florentine semi-precious stone mosaics. This remarkable context for discovery of an intrinsically Italian art form underscores the global nature of craft and material culture, laying the foundation for her lifelong pursuit of mosaic excellence.

Two pivotal experiences later provided both the inspiration and direction to push the boundaries of contemporary stone artistry: an encounter with Giovanni Montelatici’s monumental mosaics in an antiques gallery in New Orleans and a visit to Art of the Royal Court at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Over the years, she has completed more than 400 square feet (37 square meters) of mosaic commissions, pioneering a unique approach that expands beyond the traditional constraints of the craft. This relentless pursuit of excellence has led to the formation of a comprehensive materials repository, now comprising over 15,000 slices of hand-selected stone, curated through years of research, discovery, and experimentation.

Today, her expertise extends beyond mosaic into construction management and project execution, ensuring that artistry and material knowledge are seamlessly integrated with technical precision and sustainability. Her leadership is defined by a commitment to bridging the gap between historical craftsmanship and modern methodologies, ensuring that these time-honored techniques not only survive but continue to evolve within the contemporary built environment.
